            Feeling at home in the Anza-Borrego Desert, 2003. I fell in love with this desert in 1988, setting me on a path towards a trilogy of desert books, two of which involve Burning Man and the Badwater Ultra.

            whenever the powers asked, my request was to write poetry, someplace sunny, like a beach... for my sins they made me a crime writer and, after more than 40 years writing about death, disease, dying, and despair, I’ve paid in full ... what peeks from the turtle shell smells sunshine ... what claws from the same shell combs the sand ...
